Our Edinburgh Buddhist group recently had the opportunity to host a great teacher of Diamond Way Buddism, Tomek Lehnert. Tomek was the right hand of Lama Ole Nydahl for 20 years while traveling with him around the world. He has been involved in setting up Karma Kagyu Buddhist centres in the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and Russia as well as Western and Eastern Europe. He’s also the author of the book about the Karmapa issue, Rogues In Robes.

Tomek arrived on Sunday 3 April and stayed for two days. The first day began with meditation together with the friends from the Edinburgh Group, then because it was Tomek’s first time in Edinburgh, a sightseeing trip of the historical city was arranged. In the evening Tomek gave an introductory public lecture in the Royal Terrace Hotel, which was followed by the usual Q&A and meditation. On the Tuesday morning, before meditation, Tomek gave an explanation on the practice which links us with our true nature in the fastest way, guru yoga, here on the 16th Karmapa. Afterwards Tomek and friends climbed to Arthur’s Seat, where Lama Ole and Hannah were taken on their visit to Edinburgh in 2000. This is a prehistoric volcano which dominates the city, and a view-point from which one can see the whole of Edinburgh. There they made good wishes for the growth of dharma in the region. As an answer for these wishes, they observed auspicious signs over the city below. Tomek affirmed that we can expect the dharma to grow here!

Back at Ferry Road, where our Edinburgh Buddhist Group meets to meditate, Tomek gave a final, very exciting talk about the relationship between teacher and student in Diamond Way Buddhism. Before leaving, Tomek promised to come back as soon as possible.
